ClubReady Acquires GymHQ
April 2016 - Club Insider was introduced to Gym HQ, a company based in Peachtree Corners, Georgia on the Northside of Atlanta area when they contacted me via email. However, it wasn't until I received an emailed comment about Gym HQ from Gordon Johnson, a long-time industry friend, and Gold's Gym owner in the Douglasville, Georgia area, that I actually spoke with Melissa Knowles, CEO of Gym HQ. From that conversation with Melissa, I arranged a meeting with her and her partners at Gym HQ. Melissa, John Lewin, Jonathan Hill and I met at their office, and an hour and a half later, our meeting ended. By then, I'd discovered what I believed to be an excellent company that could really help you, our Club Insider readers. Read Article...

The Schwartz Family - 50 Years of Success at Midtown Athletic Club

April 2025 - Publisher's Note: Our Cover Story Classics series continues this month with the story of the legendary Schwartz Family and Midtown Athletic Club. This story was written and the interviews conducted in November 2020, during the pandemic, but the history and lessons learned over 50+ years of business are as pertinent as ever. This story was unique in that the father and son of a legendary company were interviewed by the father and son of Club Insider. It was a memorable experience that we are happy to re-share today. Sadly, since the original publication of this story, family patriarch, Alan Schwartz passed away in 2022 at age 91. May Alan Schwartz continue to rest in peace, and may Midtown continue to thrive! June 2025 - Publisher's Note: Continuing on with our Cover Story Classics series, we are aware the first few have featured those no longer with us. This month, bringing that to you live and in color is our previous cover story and update interview with Rodney Steven II, President and Co-Owner of Genesis Health Clubs. When we first featured Rodney, Genesis was at ten clubs, but they already had an incredible history/story. Fast forward to now, Genesis now operates 70+ clubs across Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, Oklahoma, Iowa, Kentucky and Florida. And, they have purchased and adapted two legendary brands into theirs: Atlantic Club and the Saw Mill Clubs. Setting all the growth aside, Rodney is also very involved with the advocacy of the industry, which benefits everyone! To that, we say, "Hooray," and "Thank You!" Read Article...

Crunch Franchising Leader Ben Midgley Defines The Advantages of The Crunch Brand
July 2014 - Ben Midgley, 44, is a 20+ year club business veteran who has enjoyed an exceptional career that was accelerated significantly when he was honored with IHRSA's 1995 Sales Person of the Year Award. Ben was featured on the front page of our December 1995 Edition of Club Insider shortly after Midgley had received the IHRSA Award on December 9, 1995 at IHRSA's 10th Annual Sales, Marketing and Programming Conference held in Atlanta, Georgia. At the time, Ben was employed by Scott Gillespie at his Saco Sports and Fitness Center in Saco, Maine. Given that Saco, Maine was a small town with a population of 12,000 and a marketplace of 40,000 people. This honor is clearly the story of a small town boy making it big in his chosen industry.
